5th April 2011 Tuesday...Mount Buffalo

Today we ventured out to Mount Buffalo... Mount Buffalo is one of Victoria's, and Australia's oldest skiing resort destinations.

It is thought that Mt Buffalo, in Mt Buffalo National Park, was once twice or even three times its current height (1723 m). Its 35-sq-km plateau is littered with striking rock formations such as the Leviathan - a 30 000-tonne rock balanced on a tiny base.

Aborigines were once drawn to the area in summer by the large numbers of bogong moths which were seeking relief from the higher temperatures of the plains. After roasting them in strips of bark they ate the bodies or ground them into a paste. It is said the moths tasted like prawns. YUK !!!!

From where John was standing it was a sheer drop... I was so nervous he was so close to the edge.. even with a fence there

The mountain's highest peak is The Horn. We didn't get up to there today as it was getting late... but we are going to go back and spend a day there... so much to see and explore.....

The views all the way up were just magic....

 This is called "The Cathedral"

These trees fascinated me they just made such fantastic photos against the blue sky...

"The Chalet"is the site of one of the original accommodations in Mount Buffalo NP built by James Manfield, a settler who originally led prospectors on a vain search for gold in the region. Visitors flocked to the area and, seeing the opportunity for tourism the government evicted Manfield, destroyed his chalet and built Mount Buffalo Chalet, now listed as a place of significance on the National Heritage List. It turn 100 years old last year in May...it is closed down at the moment, which is a shame.

Stay tuned for more pictures when we return to this great place...
